Deputy Louis H. Estay was struck and killed on Sunday, November 29, 1953 by a drunk driver as he and another deputy were standing on the edge of U.S. Highway 90 approximately one mile east of Boutte. The two deputies had been patrolling the area in separate vehicles and had stopped to talk on the edge of the roadway. They were both struck by a speeding vehicle driven by a drunk driver. The driver was arrested and charged with negligent homicide.
His memory is honored on the St. Charles Parish Fallen Heroes Memorial and at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. on panel 11W-34.
