Deputies prepare for new security measures at St. Charles Parish Courthosue.
Starting this fall, visitors to the St. Charles Parish Courthouse will be required to pass through security scanners in order to enter the building.
The scanners will detect guns, knives, and flammable liquids. Visitors’ cell phones will also be prohibited. There also will be a single public entrance at the northeast corner of the building.
Construction to enlarge the entrance to the courthouse has been recently completed.
“The system is designed for the safety and security of the public and parish employees,” said Maj. Gil Schmidt, who is in charge of courthouse security.
The system has been in the works for several years, and is similar to those used in courthouses throughout the state.
