1. Will my child be arrested for defending himself?

No, however, there is a fine line between defending yourself and getting even. All factors are taken into consideration before an arrest takes place.

2. Who makes the determination to arrest a student?

The school principal conducts their normal investigation and upon completion, presents this information to sheriff's deputies. A determination of probable cause is made based on this information and/or through additional investigation. Only then is an arrest made.

3. Will I get the bond back?

This is a diversionary program designed to help the student avoid prosecution. As such, if the student actively participates in all aspects of the program, he/she will receive all but $100, which is retained to offset the cost of the diversionary program.

4. What if I don't have all of the $250 needed for the bond?

You can pay a $25 deposit and agree to pay $25 weekly until the bond is paid.

5. What takes place in a conflict resolution class?

Students are given instruction on how to prevent disagreements from escalating into physical confrontations and take other actions.

6. What takes place at community service?

Students are given school improvement projects such as general cleaning, removing graffiti from walls, baseboards and doors, removing gum wherever found, repainting parking lot lines and outdoor courts, and general school or yard clean-up.

7. What if my child does not participate in all parts of the program?

This is a voluntary program. Students can choose normal court proceedings, or they can elect to be diverted from this process through this program.
