| The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office participating in the 2013 Police Unity Tour. Our officers are cycling alongside men and women with agencies from Arizona to Virginia to the DC Memorial. We wish them a safe trip as they ride for those who died in the line of duty. May, 2013
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office's Motorcycle Unit is a vital component in combating speeding and dangerous driving on the parish's roads.
Ensuring citizens' safety is a chief priority of the unit, added to the Patrol Department in December of 2000. In addition to assigning special task forces and extra patrols, the department regularly relies on data compiled by its two Radar Trailers to target areas where drivers are prone to violate the law.
"The bikes bring an added dimension to our community policing effort," Sheriff Champagne said. "Because our rural areas and some of our narrower, shorter streets are more easily accessible on the Harleys, we've increased our visibility and patrols around the parish. The main thing I'd like to see is people slowing down on the parish's roadways and obeying traffic signs."
The motorcycle patrols also assist at special events, the Sheriff said.
TrainingPrior to manning the fully-equipped Harley Davidsons, deputies are required to successfully complete a two- to 12-week intensive training course.
